Car Insurance for a 20 year old in new york?

Okay so heres the deal. Im currently working full time and attending school part time in new york. To make life easier, i%26#039;ve decided to purchase a car. But the thing that bothers me the most is the car insurance. I know I%26#039;m going to have to pay alot even for only liability. The question is would it be cheaper ( insurance wise) to buy a used car or a brand new car? I%26#039;m not trying to get a sports car, just something to drive around and make life easier. Either way I%26#039;m going to finance it if it makes a difference. I%26#039;ve had my license for a year now with no previous insurance records.

By the way, my dad lives in another state. Is there any way he can buy the car for me and have it insured?

its going to be a LOT cheaper to buy a used car that you can pay cash for and carry liability only on. if you purchase a car and need full coverage THATS where you will run into big bucks. the car needs to be registered and insured in the state its located.

If you finance the car, you HAVE to carry full coverage, whether it is brand new or used. Of course, if you pay cash, you can carry liability only, which is cheaper, but you have to replace the car if something happens to it. Since you are a student, you should in most cases be able to be added to your parents insurance. This is something that would have to be checked specifically with your company. As far as the specifics of the car, it%26#039;s really hard to say. Rates vary from car to car, year to year, model to model, and company to company. You can check with a local agent, and they can give you a quote on various car types, and that%26#039;s about the only surefire way you%26#039;ll find out. Some of the variables regarding the car which are used to determine the premium are Variables include the likelihood of theft, the cost of the car, the cost of repairs, and the overall safety record of the car. You can read more about the factors used to determine your rate here: http://www.knowyouragent.net/WhatDetermi...

It is perfectly legal for your dad to register and insure this car in his state and you drive it in another state (you are away at school). This would by FAR be the cheapest way for you to insure it, as both vehicles would then get a multi-car credit.

Buy an older but in good condition car, that would not require you to carry comp or collision - also the cheapest way to go.

Because you are going to finance it most likely the bank is going to require that you carry full coverage.

By buying an older car the value will be less which should make the comp and collision a little cheaper.

I also would get as many quotes as possible. You would be surprised how much the cost of insurance can vary from one company to the next.

There are services that can help you find the best quote available to you.

By filling out one form on-line you can get multiple quotes from different companies and agents.

This beats talking to dozens of agents giving the same information over and over just to end up getting quotes from the same companies.

I have been able to save a lot of money by shopping every few years.

The important thing is to use reliable companies that offer this kind of service. I know of two that are very good. If you are interested you can access them at:
